Is/Was

One week ago this morning, began Prince’s last day on Earth.

April 14th, 2016
His last concert at the Fox Theatre, in my home town of Atlanta.
One week later he was gone.

NEW FALLON TRIBUTE LAST NIGHT

This morning, I woke to a text from my friend (my Prince-pusher and dear friend since 1990, in our Chicago days). In it, he alerted me, as he always had of ANY Prince news over the past twenty-six years we’ve known eachother. Simply, “Prince on Fallon.”

He was, of course, referring to the tribute to Prince.

But in my 5am read of it early this morning, I read, “Prince is on Fallon.”

PING-PONG WITH FALLON

Similarly, yesterday this clip from Fallon about him playing ping-pong with Prince, was posted via MPLS StarTribune. My response to it was:
Ha! Sweet that Fallon initially said, if you ever ‘meet’ him... then corrected. :( But with Prince’ energy, humor, and the news having been so shocking, I’ve done that too, over these past few days.

NEW/OLD MUSIC FROM PRINCE

My friend also posted a tender, beautiful ballad of Prince’s “Somewhere Here on Earth” yesterday. I replied to his post with, “Woah. And this is yet ANOTHER Prince song I've never heard before.” [And I have all 39 albums, plus bootlegs, etc. etc.]

Very tender. ‘As long as I'm.... here on earth.’ And, of course, bittersweetly profound now that he... is not.

That conversation continued:
My friend said: It’s from his Planet Earth cd. Do u have it?
Me: Ah! You're right. I forgot.
He replied: Easy to forget with as many gems as this man created!
Keep in mind — I had a hard time keeping up, listening, to Prince's work while he was alive. Now. I've declared:
I've decided I'm simply going to have to clone myself so ONE of me can read all of these amazing articles, and check these insane performances — and THE REST OF ME can go and do my day job, have a life, etc...
Even though many of us are in deeeeep as fans of his over the years, we have never met Prince. We do not know him — oops — did not know him.

Is/Was.

WHERE WAS HE HEADING?

I remember when Around the World in a Day came out. I HATED it.

Completely didn’t understand it.

What's all this ‘cloud’ and ‘fluffy’ shit all about? And raspberries. I mean keep in mind the context. This is the same artist who has just done, Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999. Sort of gritty stuff. Now Condition of the Heart? Paisley Park? What is he thinking???

Does not compute.

But later, it would.

THAT album would become my ‘go to’ for ANY creative painting, thinking, writing over the years. It has something in it to where I can have that whole CD on loop... for hours.

Not understanding something, but still supporting. That was/is Prince’s deep fans.

We have listened enthusiastically throughout his career. Loving each new release. Not stuck on one album or era. Curious to see where he was headed each time.

Prince & The Evolution, if you will.
