Learning through repetition

Doubt your doubts instead of your potential.

I still love this saying. It's just good advice.

'Thursday Inspiration' life wisdom

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
Allow events to change you. Forget about good. Process is more important than outcome. Love your experiments. Go deep. Capture accidents. Study. Drift. Begin anywhere. Everyone is a leader. Harvest ideas. Keep moving. Slow down. Don't be cool. Collaborate. ____________. Stay up late. Work the metaphor. Be careful to take risks. Repeat yourself. Make your own tools. Stand on someone's shoulders. Don't clean your desk. Don't enter award competitions. Read only left-hand pages. Make new words. Think with your mind. Organization = Liberty. Don't borrow money. Listen carefully. Take field trips. Make mistakes faster. Imitate. Scat. Explore the other edge. Coffee breaks, cab rides, green rooms (real growth often happens outside of where we intend it to, in what Dr. Suess calls, "the waiting place"). Avoid being categorized. Power to the people. Laugh. Remember.
This abbreviated version comes from a great Plan B email I received called 'Thursday Inspiration.' Thanks, Chuck.

Beginning. Ending. Waiting. Deciding.

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
Okay, this is a throw-back, so hang on.

A few weeks back, during a Saturday morning cleaning, I popped in a Prince... tape. Yes, a cassette from the 80's. One of my faves. I was in the other room when it happened. It just 'ended.' It was nostalgic to me when, after side "A" finished, it just stopped. So I went in, turned it to side "B" and well over twenty years later, could easily anticipate what that next song would be.

Of course if you wanted to get to a particular song you had to decide to fast-forward, or rewind. Then you had to [gasp] wait to get to that song.

I love the shuffle on my iPod. I love the never-ending, completely unrelated mix of songs we can listen to. I love having instant access to getting new songs whenever I want (and being SO bad with who sang which song, I love the clarity provided by the internet). But there was something so very refreshing about that pause. That break in time. That non non-stopness of the eighties.

Oh, and Prince is performing 4 nights in a row, 25th-28th, this week on Leno.

New Chapter. Little Sister.

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
Excitement and anticipation.

This past weekend I was with my family in the mountains of North Carolina and the youngest of my two sisters got engaged. We love her boyfriend, now fiancé, and the first thing I said to him was, welcome to the family. And how wonderful for him to have a larger 'family' right now... he will be deployed to Iraq in early April. Please keep him and my sister in your thoughts. It's an exciting time for them both, and we anticipate his safe return to the states in October.

This entry is not for you

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
I'm a patient person with this request. This isn't the first time I've made it. It won't be the last. And I have received some wonderful flowers since the last blog request and hope this will encourage you to pull out that ball point pen, that can of spray paint, the macaroni noodles, or the Parisian oil paints, whatever... just looking for your flower.

Everything sounds better in french, so I'll let you look this one up:
le jardin de mes amis.

This idea began at the end of a year living in France when I did a painting exchange with two friends, one now in LA, the other Santa Fe. It later occurred to me the paintings were were both of flowers, and I love flowers. Then I imagined a space filled with these 'flowers'. A 'garden' of them created by people who have inspired me: friends, family, neighbors, colleagues. I have over twenty flowers already. Some are just doodles, others are detailed paintings. I will continue to collect these for years to come, from the folks who come into my life. So, for those of you who have already sent me your flower, merci bien! And for those who have not yet done one...

Will you draw, paint, sketch, or collage a FLOWER and send it to me?
Use an index card, post-it note, or large canvas. A crayon, ballpoint pen, or fine paintbrush. W
hatever you feel inclined to use. Just keep it simple. Easy. Un-fussy. Be creative. Or not. Just as long as you created it. Handmade is best, so no photos. And yes, a circle with a line below it qualifies as a flower.
It's a flower.
ou created it by hand.
Postcard stamp is 27¢. First class stamp is 42¢ till May 11th. Then it's 44¢.
If you are thinking, that this entry is not for you, "this entry must be for someone else." Nope. It IS for you. I believe that each person that comes into our lives, has an impact on it. And I would love to add your flower to the garden ...yes, you.

Whack on the side of the head

When you are stuck on, well, anything — I love this pack of cards to jump start your thinking. "Creative Whack Pack." I've had mine forever. They are quite tattered on the edges, and they still work. Check out Roger von Oech's blog. It's good stuff.

Priceless. When you care enough... Just do it. Is it in you? Where's the beef? Drivers wanted. Keeps going and going. Maybe she's born with it. Absolut. You are now free to fly about the country. We'll leave the light on for you. Everywhere you want to be. And I have to say... it would be nice if there were an Easy Button. I'm lovin' it.

Try this...

Doubt your doubts instead of your potential.

W E D N E S D A Y - E V E N I N G — It isn't neglect or busy-ness that Monday's entry is still here. I saw this quote in a book recently and it instantly resonated with me. I was actually going to repeat it each day but instead decided to simply leave it up for the week. It's that significant to me. And it's good advice
