Giving Thanks

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
As I was making a job transition, almost a year ago, it was important to me to let the people I had worked with know I appreciated them. A simple 'thank you.' These were people who had an impact on me, people who had helped or encouraged me. Since then, I've also begun to realize the effects of the amazing networking circuit in the DC area. It is a very supportive community, trying to help each other be better and do better. What a great concept to live by! May we always be surrounded by those people who challenge and encourage us to be our best, to reach our potential. And for them, their support, and opportunities to come... may we 'give thanks.'

And currently working as a freelance Art Director in the DC area,
the creative leads you've sent me already have been invaluable.
Keep 'em coming! And, of course, thank you.- WendyHudgins.com

Searching. Finding.

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S -
Searching for that entry from a few days ago? The 'search blog' field is up above at the left, in the dark blue bar. Try one of these:- Life. France. Plan B. Obama. Try. Breadcrumb. Logo. Friday. Not that the search idea itself is new, I just didn't know where it was for blogs.

On the subject of searching, since our lives don't have a search field, if you've been trying to find out what your strongest skills are, or what you'd be best at with your life, check this out. You might be surprised. Fun, free, and brainless -- the best kind of test: -COLOR PROFILE -

What is 'Plan B?'

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S -
& - A - C R E A T I V E - S P A R K
In 2004, three of us had the idea that while our day jobs, 'Plan A,' were okay, we needed a creative outlet to give our real passions a chance to shine. You know them, the "someday I'd love to..." or "oh, if I only had more time..." passions?

...and you also know the Nike® slogan.

Well, e
ach of our passions were different. Painting, illustration, and photography. But the goal of our 'Plan B' was to encourage each other to get us off our butts to actually DO that thing we each loved. We were to give honest critique and be a respectful audience. I even made a business card for each of us, basically 'announcing' our pursuit of these passions.

So how does Plan B work? We each came up with a few words, or concepts, wrote them each on a piece of paper and tossed them in a hat. We all agreed that whatever word we pulled out would be the focus of a new project for each of us. Our project began when we drew this one out of the hat: "2:40am."

2:40am? What? My passion is photography, what the heck am I gonna do with THAT? But okay, a deal is a deal. In my brainstorming, it dawned on me that I was heading to France soon and 2:40am state-side, is 8:40am in France! Perfect. So, wherever I was at 8:40am I'd compose a simple black and white photo. New photos were created because of this group.
I got off my butt. And I did it.

We all shared how we incorporated that word into a new project and as I presented my photos to the group, I shared this: We must be responsible to our gifts amongst the chaos of life. Be awake. Be aware. And whatever happens with each of us throughout The Creativity we call life, whatever directions life may take us, may each of us always be surrounded by others who support this idea, who crave creativity, who inspire, challenge, and encourage us... and by those who make us see differently.

To whom much is given, much is expected. Remercie mon ami.

One day Plan A will step aside. We will be ready.

Driving throughout rural areas, I've always loved the simple messages

Be calm. Be strong. Be grateful.

What happens when you give your dreams a chance?

B.T.Baking
B R E A D C R U M B S
Last year, a friend of mine asked me to help him out with a logo. Todd was leaving the place we both worked at and heading off to pursue a long time dream of his. Baking. He was very serious and passionate about that goal. So off I went to develop a logo for his company. We worked through many name variations, and he landed on B.T.™(Better Together™). The ingredients are all organic, and he works with unique combinations of flavors, so he wanted a simple logo to reflect the simple and organic ingredients. The best part of this job? The taste-testing! Delicious! Then, as life has it, time passed. And out of the blue, just last night, 11/11, entry day of the "Breadcrumb Blog," someone emails me this link to Todd's website. Todd's creations are clearly off and running. This photo of Todd, Mr. Obama, and the logo on the brownies was taken just before the election. So, to "opportunity and prosperity"...yes, we can. What happens when we give our dreams a chance? They just may come true. Congratulations, Todd!

What is a 'breadcrumb'

B R E A D C R U M B S
I created this story in 1992, when I lived in Chicago, after 'coincidences' kept piling up in my life. Ones that made me do a double-take. You know, when you think of someone you haven't seen in ages and turn the corner and there they are. Weird. Well, as these piled up, I began to feel that they meant something. Like they were almost directional in life. Then coupled with the feeling that, growing up, I didn't have any really neat, unique, rich, 'stories' and traditions to pass along I realized... well, SOMEONE has to START those stories, those traditions. Why not me?

Inspired by Hansel and Gretel's story of leaving breadcrumbs in the woods so they could find their way home, I began to call these coincidences, "BREADCRUMBS." Or if it's a really big coincidence, we've called them loafs, croutons, even 'factories' if it's a really, really, crazy-big coincidence.

The idea is that your life should have these 'breadcrumbs' scattered throughout your life, it sort of reminds you you're on the right path. If you haven't had a breadcrumb in a while... you might just want to step back and take a look at things. Now I do not propose to have lofty powers or crystal-ball insights, nor would I ever want that. This is merely a story. An idea. But life can be big and crazy, and to gain a sense that there is some rhyme, reason, and order to the often messiness of life through a simple story, why the heck not?

So, how do you 'use' this word? It's a noun. You'd say, as friends of mine now report in to me, "Wendy, I had the biggest breadcrumb today!!" or "That's a breadcrumb."

On a separate note of neat things, of all the numbers on a digital clock, the time of 11:11 always looks impressive to me, like something big should happen then, and it always catches my eye. So as I'm turning off the lights downstairs last night, I happened to glance at the clock and right at that moment, it was... 11:11pm. That was a breadcrumb.

One final thought to leave you with, I'm new at blogging, I LOVE this outlet, and the fact that I happened to choose to explain this story today... November eleventh... yes, that would certainly qualify.

Perfect timing

T W E N T Y - S I X - L E T T E R S
This morning on the news, I heard of a woman who's home has been on the market for two years and she's now raffling off her house at $100 a ticket. She could earn $250,000. Likewise, someone will get a house for $100! Brilliant! Have clutter to address in your home? Ebay, craigslist, and donating to charities. Fabulous! Do it. Make money. Save money. Share. This economy impacts us all in some way. But it is not all bad.

Look how amazingly resourceful and optimistic we've become. As many jobs are being downsized in this economy, we've been downsizing our lives. We have nowhere to go but up, and this means... TRY IT. You have an idea? Try it. You want to volunteer. Try it. You want to help a neighbor. Try it. Want a different direction with your career? It's the perfect time to be bold and be brave. We have to be. We are in the worst economic time in ages. And good for us. What an opportunity.

We are brilliant, resourceful, and creative when we have to try, have to think, have to do it a different way. Good for us.
